06/05/2010 - Charlottesville, VA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Former University of Virginia football player and athletics director Jim Copeland has died at the age of 65 following a lengthy battle with cancer.

The Charlottesville native was the school's AD from September, 1987 through December, 1994 and also held the same position at William and Mary, Utah and Southern Methodist.

"The growth of the UVa athletics program was impacted significantly by Jim Copeland's leadership as our athletics director," said current Virginia AD Craig Littlepage. "Jim's biggest contributions, however, were in his character, integrity and professionalism."

Copeland was a three-year starter on the offensive line for the Cavaliers and was selected in the tenth round of the 1967 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He played professionally for eight seasons and was a member of Browns' teams that played in NFL championship games against Baltimore in 1968 and Minnesota the following season.

He was inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
